Our Complete Guide to the October 8th ?Hunter?s Moon? Total Lunar Eclipse

2344 eclipse Intel Corporation ( INTC ) declined the most among the Dow components. Internet names such as Pandora Media, Inc. ( P ), Facebook, Inc. ( FB ) and Twitter, Inc. ( TWTR ) declined 3.9%, 3.2% and 2.9%, respectively. Bio-tech names such as Gilead Sciences Inc. ( GILD ), Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated ( VRTX ) Amgen Inc. ( AMGN ), Biogen Idec Inc. ( BIIB ), Celgene Corporation ( CELG ) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ( REGN ) decreased 0.8%, 4.5%, 1.2%, 2.2%, 1.4% and 1.4%, respectively. The Russell 2000 Index of small-cap stocks entered correction level. The index dropped 1.5% to 1,085.41 at 4 p.m.

Timings for key phases of the eclipse are as follows: P1- Penumbral phase begins: 8:14 UT/4:14 EDT/1:14 PDT U1- Umbral (partial) phase begins: 9:15 UT/5:14 EDT/2:14 PDT U2- Totality begins: 10:24 UT/6:24 EDT/3:24 PDT Mid-totality- 10:55 UT/6:55 EDT/3:55 PDT U3- Totality ends: 11:25 UT/7:25 EDT/4:25 PDT U4- Umbral phase ends: 12:35 UT/5:35 PDT P4- Penumbral phase ends: 13:35/6:35 PDT Not all total lunar eclipses are the same when it comes to color. Totality can appear anywhere from a dark brick color, as happened during the December 9th, 1992, eclipse followingthe eruption of Mount Pinatubo, when the Moon nearly disappeared during totality, to a bright coppery red, as seen during the April eclipse earlier this year. The Moon passes to the north of the dark central core of the Earth shadow next Wednesday, so expect a brighter than normal eclipse, especially along the Moons northeast limb. Grab a painters wheel and compare the eclipsed Moon to swatches of orange through red: what colors do you see? What youre seeing is the combinations of all the worlds sunsets refracted into the cone of the Earths shadow, which is about three times the size of the Moon at its average distance as seen from Earth. Remember, the Moon is experiencing a total solar eclipse as we watch the lunar eclipse unfold! The October 8th total solar eclipse as seen from the Apollo 11 landing site on the nearside of the Moon. Created using Stellarium. This color can be quantified and described on what is known as the Danjon Scale , with 0 being a very dark eclipse with the Moon barely visible, to a 4, meaning a very bright eclipse. And yes, each total lunar eclipse is now receiving the Blood Moon meme thanks to ye ole Internet. Expect the conspiracy-minded to note that this eclipse occurs on the Jewish holiday of Sukkot starting at sundown on the 8th, which isnt really all that wondrous as the Jewish calendar is a luni-solar one, and total lunar eclipses have to occur during a Full Moon by definition. Wait long enough, and an occasional Sukkot total lunar eclipse does indeed occur. The footprint of the October 8th occultation of Uranus by the Moon during totality. (Credit: Occult 4.1.0). But a truly rare event does occur during this eclipse, as the Moon actually occults (passes in front of) the planet Uranus during totality for observers in northern Alaska and northeast Asia. The rest of us in the observing zone will see a near miss. Can you spy Uranus with binoculars near the lunar limb during totality? Another such rarity occurred during Shakespeares time on December 30th, 1591, involving Saturn and the eclipsed Moon, and another such odd occurrence transpires in 2344 A.D. SHO, 9:00 pm EDT, Rances Barthelemy vs Fernando Saucedo, Vanes Martirosyan vs Willie Nelson, Chad Dawson vs Tommy Karpency, Dominic Wade vs KeAndrae Leatherwood. It's not a card likely to get anyone's knickers all excited or whatever, but Barthelemy-Saucedo and Martirosyan-Nelson are legitimate fights, at least, and Wade is a solid prospect looking to keep moving forward. Dawson-Karpency is trash but that's life. And at least SHO has beaten HBO back to the airwaves for the fall. BLH will have live coverage. View gallery . beIN Sports Espanol / Televisa (MEX), 11:00 pm EDT, Jhonny Gonzalez vs Jorge Arce, Adrian Estrella vs Celestino Caballero. Gonzalez-Arce is going to go one of two ways, and I doubt there's any in-between in this. Either Gonzalez brutally beats down Arce within 3-4 rounds, and it looks like the farce many fear, or Travieso defies time and logic once again and makes a fight of this thing. Gonzalez is hardly invincible himself, and he's known to have a vulnerable chin. The co-feature here is pretty good, too, as big punching prospect Estrella (18-0, 17 KO) looks to make a mark against Caballero, following a career-best win over Dante "Crazy" Jardon in July. BLH will have live coverage. UniMas, Midnight EDT, Felix Verdejo vs Sergio Villanueva, Gamalier Rodriguez vs Martin Gonzalez, Esquiva Falcao vs Austin Marcum.

The average in Springfield, Missouri, is already below $3, according to Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service and GasBuddy.com. Several other cities are on the brink. "And there will be more, many more," Kloza said. Cities in high-priced states such as California and New York will not be among them, though, which will probably keep the national average above $3. At the current national average of $3.35 a gallon, gas is a dime cheaper than a year ago at this time. The gap is 20 cents or more in seven states, including California, Kansas, South Dakota and Connecticut, according to AAA. Lower fuel prices help the economy in a few ways. They make goods cheaper to ship and make travel more affordable. Drivers are left with a few extra dollars in their pockets. And consumers grow confident enough to make other purchases, perhaps even a big-ticket item. Consumer spending is 70 percent of the U.S. economy. Aidan Obrecht, a 20-year-old community college student from Boothwyn, Pennsylvania, said gas in his area has fallen 10 to 20 cents over the past couple of weeks. He paid $3.27 a gallon Thursday to fill up his Ford Taurus on his way to work at a CVS pharmacy. "I'm living paycheck to paycheck, so it's nice to be able to save" he said. "Even if it's $5 or $10 extra (after a fill-up), it adds up over the long run." Fall is when refiners are allowed to switch to a cheaper blend of gasoline for the cooler months, and driving demand declines after summer vacations have ended.

While the budget city commissioners approved holds down property taxes, there will still be $800,000 for 10 new police officers, roughly $700,000 for the city employee raises and thousands more for new police and fire vehicles that will be leased. To have more predictable and steady funding requirements, the budget includes $120,000 for the first-year lease of a fire engine and fire pumper, and $100,000 to both buy and lease police vehicles. Also included is a $225,000 expenditure for a new sound system at Peabody Auditorium, which could be covered by a grant, and $200,000 for a proposed homeless assistance complex. City Manager Jim Chisholm had said hed try to find about $500,000 to pay off the debt on the city-owned tennis center off LPGA Boulevard. But City Commissioner Rob Gilliland said it turns out the city would face a prepayment penalty if it did that, and the money would sit in escrow and not earn interest, so commissioners lost interest in the idea.

Kenseth Kicks Off "speeding To Read" Program At Tms - Yahoo Sports

Michael J. Dubesa, Jr. - Chronicle-Telegram

Education is obviously important. It has always been important, but I think its really important in the society that we live in with things so technologically driven. Its easy today with all the advances in technology to not take time and actually grab a book and read when you can play a video game or do something else. Its cool to see all the kids come out here, all the kids being excited about reading and trying to win for their respective schools. Its fun to see all that excitement. The excitement for Kenseth begins this week as the reformatted, elimination-style Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup opens with Sundays race at Chicagoland Speedway (ESPN, Noon CT). Its a really unique format, Kenseth said. Im really curious to see how it all works out. It should be interesting. I hope that we can win Chicago so the pressure is not on us and we can go race the next couple weeks and get ready for the next one.Its going to be exciting. Obviously, it is your goal to go to Homestead to be in one of those four cars with a shot. I hope we can do that, but youve got to get through it one round at a time. Kenseth returns to Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 2, for the AAA Texas 500, the eighth race in the 10-event Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The AAA Texas 500 is now part of the three-race Eliminator segment, which opens in Martinsville (Va.), shifts to Texas and then on to Phoenix. The field will be trimmed from eight to four contenders after this three-race segment and that foursome will go head-to-head at the Nov. 16 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to determine the Sprint Cup Series champion. Should Kenseth, seeded 14th in the 16-driver Chase field but annually a contender, advance to the Eliminator round, Texas Motor Speedway could be pivotal to his hopes of pursuing another series title. He has two victories (2002, spring of 11), ranks first with a career finishing average of 8.3, and ranks first in career top-five finishes (13 in 23 starts) and tied for the top spot with Jimmie Johnson for career top-10 finishes (16). Its funny how things change, said Kenseth, who joined Joe Gibbs Racing last year after previously spending his entire career at Roush Fenway Racing. Before I came to Joe Gibbs Racing, there were a few tracks where I felt were terrible tracks for me and some tracks that were way better. This was one that was one of my best. When I went over there some of the tracks I thought were my worst and I was really bad at ended up being some of my best tracks, New Hampshire and Martinsville.

Cook Dishes Up 'jacks' Win - Coeur D'alene Press: Sports

?Larry and Lutz? upset at Thunder Valley Raceway sets tone for Day 4 of Drag Week

?Larry and Lutz? upset at Thunder Valley Raceway sets tone for Day 4 of Drag Week Timberlake at Lakeland RATHDRUM - No report was received from the host Hawks. * GIRLS Gonzaga Prep 4 Post Falls 3 POST FALLS - Erica Simpson had a hat trick for the Trojans, but a penalty kick by Trudi Timperman gave the Bullpups the lead for good in nonleague play. Timperman scored in the 37th minute for a 3-2 halftime lead. The head referee ruled that a Post Falls player interefered with a shot attempt by a Bullpups player as she made a tackle. Timperman converted the penalty kick, then she tacked on another goal four minutes into the second half for a 4-2 lead. Simpson countered with a goal with five minutes left in the game, but the Trojans (2-2) fell short. "That's his judgment, you can't change that," Post Falls coach Sarah Stevens said of the referee. "We had several opportunities that we failed to make. We had open shots and opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. On the flip side, they took advantage where we weren't smart and they capitalized on their opportunities." Simpson also scored the first goal of the game on an assist by Alli Crain. "Erica had a good game," Stevens said. "Even though she had a good game, as great a competitor as she is, she's not going to be happy we didn't get out of there with a win." Post Falls plays at Lakeland at 10 a.m. on Saturday. First half - 1, PF, Erica Simpson (Alli Crain), 6:00.

Cook dishes up By Veronica Coons Reporter vcoons@gbtribune.com Courtesy of Hot Rod Magazine/ 1 2 Coming on the heels of an upset Wednesday in Noble, Okla., Thursdays Day 4 of Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week at the SRCA Dragstrip in Great Bend promises to be an exciting race day. Contestants in the race face a grueling torture test according to Mike Finnegan, host of cables Road Kill and Hot Rod Garage. Unlike other drag races where contestants two their vehicles to the track in trailers, the cars in this race are all street legal. Hot Rod Magazine requires drivers to drive their cars from track to track, a total of 1,000 miles, in between races. On top of that, should they break down along the way, no tow trucks or flatbeds are allowed. Repairs must be made on the road, under far less than ideal conditions. The road, in fact, can be an amazing ground leveler between the Daily driver and the well-heeled pros like Jeff Lutz and Larry Larson, both of whom have held the top spot in years past. In fact, Larry Lutz, last years overall winner, hadnt arrived at the track yet by 11 a.m. because he had repairs to be made on the road, Finnegan said. The crew left Topeka around 3 a.m., waited out a rain storm, only to have the cars charging system go out. They hooked a generator up and motored on, commentators said. The decision to ask Sheriff Haddock to take over Washington County's 11 departments was made earlier this year, with County Attorney Jeff Goodman facilitating the move. Commissioner Todd Abbott said while he didn't doubt Sheriff Haddock's ability to run the department, he wasn't comfortable with the board of commissioners not having a say in the daily operations considering the county is ultimately responsible for providing fire protection. "State mandate says that we are responsible for providing fire protection," and we have no jurisdiction or say over what the sheriff does," said Abbott. "If I'm going to be responsible for it, I want some say over it." Commissioner Lynn Gothard reiterated her previous concerns about the current operations of the fire departments, stating that hiring a County Fire Coordinator would assist local chiefs is ensuring their departments are up to code. "The fire departments have come before this board every year to discuss what needs to be done, and nothing has been done," said Gothard. "The fire departments deserve the same leadership as every other county department. The coordinator could process orders and track training and equipment standards." The board agreed to rescind the previous vote to hand fire operations to the sheriff and hire look into hiring a coordinator. 1 2 Reader comments posted to this article may be published in our print edition.
